Moo & Brew has been a staple of Plaza Midwood since it opened in 2016. Now the owners are expanding to downtown Matthews, specifically a 3,700-square-foot space at the corner of Matthews Station and N. Trade Street, the town’s main thoroughfare. The new restaurant is part of a larger plan to expand the brand to more communities.

The space

The location across from Brakeman’s Coffee and Seaboard Brewing was previously home to Moe’s Original Barbecue. When Moe’s owner was ready to retire, Moo & Brew co-owner Zach Current and his partners Ryan Grant and Ken Thomas decided the spot was ideal for expansion, Current says.

Working with Cluck Design, the partners re-envisioned the space with a new central bar (with multiple TVs for game day), roll-up garage doors, and a new back porch providing plenty of outdoor seating. The partners hope to bring live music, trivia nights and more to the new restaurant, and say it’s also an ideal spot for groups, such as youth sports banquets and team dinners.

The menu

Burgers are made with Angus beef and range from Carolina Style (chili, red onion, coleslaw and mustard) to the mildly spicy Peter Piper, a patty topped with bacon-wrapped, house-made pimento cheese-stuffed jalapenos, pepper jack, pickled jalapenos, and a spicy mayo. Turkey, bison, salmon and black bean burgers are also on the menu.

There are salads and sandwiches like The Hot Chick — fried buffalo chicken with pepper jack cheese and bacon — and shareable fry baskets in flavors like Bleu Buffalo, Rosemary Truffle & Sea Salt, and the Why Nacho Fries (chili, cheese, tomato, black beans, onion, jalapeno and sour cream).

There’s plenty of beer on tap, including the house lager — Iced Cold Beer crafted by NoDa Brewing — plus sodas and cocktails, including the signature 20-ounce Large Marge Bloody Mary.
