“Over a time span of 10 years, we were acquaintances, who became friends, who became boyfriends, who became husbands,” says Ben, anchor for WCNC’s Wake Up Charlotte. After canceled plans because of the pandemic, Ben, surrounded by close friends, dropped to one knee on a North Carolina beach they’d visited hundreds of times to propose to Brad. The couple’s engagement was a bittersweet season, as Ben’s dad was fighting terminal cancer. “It was really important to me that my dad knew I was getting married and I was happy,” Ben says. Weeks after the engagement, Ben’s dad passed away. On the day of their wedding, Ben and Brad exchanged vows as the sun was setting at Ben’s dad’s favorite place in the world: his family beach house at Sunset Beach. “It was an obvious choice.”
