Charlotte’s first nature museum will get a major overhaul, including a treetop canopy walk.

At the end of January, Discovery Place Nature on Sterling Road will close its doors — but big things are on the horizon. Construction is scheduled to begin this spring on a new building that will replace the circa-1951 structure adjacent to Freedom Park, known for years as Charlotte Nature Museum. When completed, the new museum will include a river otter habitat, a naturalist lab, animals native to the Piedmont and a treetop canopy walk on the 13-acre site. An estimated timeline for completion of the $62.3 million project has not been announced.

The current facility opened in 1951. To say farewell, the museum offered free Community Day tickets the last two weeks of January. Tickets sold out in advance of January 31, the last day. SP
