The art of the sale: Plaza Midwood estate lists for $2.3M
March 11, 2021
In the late summer of 1950, builder and developer John Crosland sought a city permit for a $30,000 residence on Belvedere Avenue. It was described as a simple two story house with a brick veneer and eight rooms. It’s now an eye-catching estate inside and out with the highest listing price ever in the Historic Plaza Midwood area at $2,295,000.
“The Belvedere,” as it’s affectionately known, is a beautifully renovated oasis just a couple miles from uptown. No doubt, as the leading developer in Charlotte at the time, Crosland built the family home with excellent bones. The current owners, Stephen L Wilson III and his wife, Aundrea, have created a stunning showplace. Wilson is a well-known artist whose work has been shown throughout the world. His works adorn the walls, along with pieces by several other artists.
The house is special on its own, but the photo tour provided by HM Properties reveals next level style and creativity, room after room. Mid-century modern-style furnishings look inviting and warm against the backdrop of high ceilings and white walls. A colorful pallet of galleries and vignettes gives the home whimsical flair.
It’s the yard art that may be most beloved by Plaza Midwood neighbors and their children (see the giraffe sculptures on the right side of the front lawn below). “We call it the giraffe house and we ride our bikes by it every so often so Jude can check on the giraffes. I hope the art stays,” said Wes Turner, past president of the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association.
“Plaza Midwood has so many beautiful, historic homes and this is certainly one of them. The grounds are simply fantastic,” said Lisa Swayne Proud, president of the neighborhood association. She hopes the new owners participate in neighborhood home tour and become involved. “Although Plaza Midwood has great architecture, what really makes our neighborhood special is the people and the fun we have together,” she said.
As for the giraffes, we’re checking with HM Properties to find out whether they stay with the property or go to a new home with the sellers. One thing is certain, this property will always turn heads. “The Wilsons have created an inviting sanctuary in fantastic location that will be attractive to potential buyers,” said listing agent Valerie Mitchener of HM Properties.
