On Friday, March 20, Etihad Airways launched nonstop service between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Abu Dhabi, marking a major shift for Charlotte’s aviation landscape. The route positions the airport — long known as a high-volume connector hub — as a growing gateway for luxury-leaning global travel. (At the time of publication, the new flights were open for booking despite unrest in the Gulf region.)
Charlotte was a “natural fit” for the luxury airline’s expansion, according to Etihad Airways representative Alpna Mathews. Charlotte’s position as a thriving center for finance, advanced manufacturing, motorsports, technology and healthcare mirrors Abu Dhabi’s increasingly diversified economy. That alignment makes the CLT–AUH route especially attractive for corporate travelers. Charlotte now joins New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston and Atlanta as the airline’s U.S. destinations.
Charlotte’s growing global profile
Recent metrics from Charlotte Douglas tell a similar story of rapid expansion. The airport has steadily climbed the ranks of the world’s busiest hubs. In 2024, it ranked sixth globally for takeoffs and landings and recorded double-digit year-over-year growth in international traffic.
For a carrier like Etihad Airways, which continues to expand its fleet and global network, Charlotte offers both scale and momentum. Etihad is Charlotte’s newest global flight partner since 2018, when Volaris began nonstop flights to Guadalajara, Mexico.
“Etihad currently serves 11 cities in India alone, plus key destinations across the Middle East, Africa and Asia,” Mathews explains. The airline sees a mix of corporate and leisure passengers “looking to travel and explore new destinations from Charlotte.”
Established in 2003, the UAE’s national carrier has substantially grown to operate approximately 90 destinations worldwide, with 22.4 million ticketed passengers in 2025.
As Charlotte’s first Middle Eastern carrier, the new route officially places the city on the map among Gulf airline gateways known for luxury service, thoughtful design and aspirational cabins.

A modern flying experience
Passengers on the inaugural flight traveled aboard the A350, one of the airline’s most modern aircrafts. The A350 has 371 seats including 44 business-class studios and 327 economy seats.
Business-class travelers will enjoy private suites with closing doors, personal minibars, meals on demand and lie-flat beds. Across both cabins, passengers on the 13-15 hour flights can expect the airline’s signature hospitality, including a halal dining program and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi.
The airline was also recently recognized as the safest full-service carrier, a point Mathews says the airline takes great pride in as a foundation of its operations.
Beyond in-flight luxury
The Etihad experience extends beyond the aircraft.
The airline has partnered with hotels across the United Arab Emirates for its Abu Dhabi Stopover program, which offers travelers a complimentary two-night stay at select properties in the city.
“You could get two vacations in one — and possibly even three,” Mathews says.
Mathews also shared future plans for the upcoming Etihad Rail high-speed link, which will allow travelers to reach Dubai from Abu Dhabi in roughly half the current travel time.
Etihad arrives in Charlotte with an established reputation for high-touch service, though Mathews emphasizes that the airline views luxury as accessible rather than exclusive.
“I think Etihad is luxury in that sense. But at the same time, our product doesn’t mean that it doesn’t cater to everybody,” she says.
One of the route’s most quietly luxurious features may be its pre-departure convenience: Travelers returning to the United States can complete customs and immigration before boarding in Abu Dhabi.
“If you’re entering the U.S., you clear customs in Abu Dhabi, and you enter the U.S. just like a domestic carrier,” Mathews says. “It saves so much time.”

A strategic plan for Charlotte travelers
The nonstop CLT–AUH service operates four days a week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Recognizing that Charlotte is firmly rooted as a hub for American Airlines, Etihad has partnered with the carrier to provide seamless connections for passengers traveling beyond Charlotte.
“It’s really about going beyond borders,” says Mathews, later adding, “Making the world a little bit closer to each other. It gives you the opportunity to explore, whether it’s for personal travel or business travel.”
