Serene by the sea

Relax, reset and renew at Amanyara, a dreamy resort cloistered in a nature reserve in Turks and Caicos.

When your mind is free of distractions, you notice the small things — a pair of hummingbirds flitting back and forth between the trees, the tiniest hermit crab inching across the sand, little purple flowers blooming on beach morning glory vines blanketing the dune.

A few days at Amanyara was the ultimate sensory swap — I left behind the city sounds of cars and construction for the calls of sea birds, ocean breezes and the gentle lapping of the waves.

Amanyara is nestled on the western shore of Providenciales, far from the more populated stretch of hotels and restaurants lining Grace Bay. That out-of-the-way location, shouldering an 18,000-acre nature reserve and national park, offers the first clue to the resort’s peaceful and private atmosphere. The lush greenery on the drive in is another — each of the resort’s 38 pavilions and 19 villas are discreetly tucked into the natural landscape of low-lying trees for a secluded stay.

AWAY FROM THE CROWDS

Aman resorts are known for peace and privacy, attracting a global clientele. But if there’s a celebrity on-site, chances are you’d never know it. That’s by design. At Amanyara, even communal spaces like restaurants, pools, the spa and sports complex are spread across the sprawling property so the resort never feels crowded.

One-bedroom pavilions overlook the ocean or a tranquil pond, with floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in; some have private pools. My oceanfront pavilion sat atop a rocky escarpment — the Turks and Caicos islands are built on an ancient limestone foundation — with a private patio and a short footpath to the shoreline below. Beach cruisers are provided for getting around, though you can always call for a staff member in a golf cart to transport you where you need to go.

For bigger groups or those seeking more seclusion, larger villas — more like gated residential compounds with three to six bedrooms — offer private infinity pools, butler service and personal chefs.

FOCUS ON FITNESS + WELLNESS

Aman resorts clearly cater to a clientele who prioritize keeping fit, even while on vacation. Amanyara regularly hosts wellness pop-ups and retreats and brings in global experts. Visiting specialists in 2026 include integrative wellness practitioner Matteo Pasquali, Pilates instructor and professional healer Odete Cruz, and Thai massage master Javier de Prado. Aman also teamed with tennis superstar Novak Djokovic to develop a three-day detoxification wellness program available at seven of its properties, including Amanyara. The program can be tailored for each client and might include yoga, sound bath relaxation and ayurvedic spa treatments.

I booked a Detox Mat Pilates session with Celia, a specialist from Erika Bloom Movement, the global fitness studio with a celebrity following. I met Celia at the spa, outside on a covered platform with a cooling cross breeze overlooking a glasslike reflecting pool. I’m no Pilates pro, but sessions can be adapted for all skill levels, with an emphasis on breath, twisting and flow. Celia quickly identified my problem area (upper back between the shoulder blades) and tailored the hourlong experience just for me.

At the sports complex adjacent to the spa, there’s a Pilates studio, four clay tennis courts, a boxing studio, pickleball court — even a soccer pitch. Down by the beach, watersports prevail: Kayaking, standup paddleboarding, Hobie Cat sailboat lessons and daily snorkeling excursions are included with your stay.

Lounging is perfectly fine, too, and beach attendants keep you happy and hydrated with ice-cold water, chilled fruit skewers and whatever your heart desires from the oceanfront Beach Club. Equally relaxing is the resort’s sleek black infinity pool made of volcanic rock overlooking the turquoise sea.

ALL-DAY, DELECTABLE DINING

Breakfast starts with an assortment of delectable pastries and croissants, but there are plenty of lighter options, too (smoothies, coconut chia pudding, acai bowls), along with family-friendly selections (waffles, French toast, pancakes) and more than a few vegetarian and gluten-free choices.

Lunch on sushi, zesty conch salad and fish tacos at the Beach Club, just steps from the white sandy shore and a club for kids. At the center of the resort, the Bar starts buzzing around afternoon tea time. The open-air, circular structure with soaring ceilings draws a gentle ocean breeze and is ringed by daybeds, inviting guests to linger for a while.

Dinner at the Restaurant offers a choice of sunset views on one side or a tranquil reflecting pool on the other, dotted with exquisite, oversized pottery crafted by North Carolina’s own Ben Owen in his Seagrove studio. Most nights, the menu leans Asian with curries, wok-fired dishes like pad thai, a kimchi and chicken stew, and Japanese wagyu sirloin. On other days, the chef mixes it up with a Mediterranean-inspired menu.

For a truly special occasion — perhaps to reward yourself for such mindful self-care — book a private dining experience on the beach, where you’ll enjoy 180-degree sunset views, a dedicated server at your beck and call, and a blazing bonfire in a setting that’s pure magic.  SP
