24 years of kicking cancer’s booty

by Michelle Boudin

It is a milestone year for one of Charlotte’s most beloved traditions. This summer marks the 24th year for 24 Hours of Booty, the annual bike ride around Myers Park’s famed cycling loop that raises money to help people fighting cancer. This year’s event is July 25-26, with Myers Park Traditional School and Queens University of Charlotte again serving as “Bootyville” — a base where participants camp, eat and recharge when not on the course.

Since the first ride:

  • $29 million+ raised to help people fighting cancer
  • 29,000 participants
  • 8,000 annual spectators
  • 9,200 volunteers
  • 27,600 slices of pizza consumed
  • 207,000 average snacks consumed
  • 39,100 estimated gallons of water, energy drinks and coffee consumed
  • 720,000 approximate calories burned per hour by participants riding the Booty Loop
  • 92 million pedal revolutions participants completed on their bikes over the last 23 years
  • 354 miles the most miles completed by an individual at one event. Shout-out to Jim Gleason!
  • $106,000 Most raised by an individual — Katie Bleau — in one year
  • $168,737 Most raised by a team — LIBSTRONG/Drew’s Crew — in one year
  • 800 walkers who have taken strides to help change the course of cancer since 2016 (The event is open to both cyclists and walkers.)

Where the money goes:

  • 74 cents of every dollar is spent on mission-related expenses
  • 800 massages and acupuncture services for patients at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute
  • 1,900 in-person and virtual therapy interactions
  • 574 patients seen in Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital survivorship clinic in 2024, where patients received healthy snacks from the 24 Foundation
