Charlotte’s newest baking studio rolls out cake-decorating classes, cocktail classes and more

Charlotte’s newest baking studio has rolled out classes, with fall-inspired cupcakes, intro to cake decorating and French macaron classes on the agenda. Opened by pastry chef Jossie Lukacik (formerly of Heirloom, the Asbury and Block & Grinder), Sweet Spot Studio aims to offer pastry and baking classes for the general public (amateurs, you’re safe here) as well as industry professionals.
Find Sweet Spot Studio at 4412-D Monroe Road, in the business park behind Common Market Oakwold. The studio space is bright and neat, with stainless steel baking stations and outlets hanging next to each station for plugging in appliances.

The space formerly occupied by Lukacik’s artisanal dessert business, Sweet Affairs (at 4416-D Monroe Road), has transitioned into Sweet Spot Kitchen, an incubator for entrepreneurial baking businesses — there are already nine tenants.

To start, expect one to two classes each week at the studio, with additional classes added as the year wraps up, and private classes available upon request. Classes, which hold 12 people, will run up to three hours, with prices ranging from $40-$75 based on difficulty and topic.
As an inexperienced and stressed-out non-chef, I found the “Naked Cake with Ganache Drip” class challenging but light-hearted, with Lukacik demonstrating each technique before setting the participants loose with their own cakes. I only butchered mine a little bit. Check out classes here.
Lukacik, who instructs with sweet patience and an edge of humor, will be the main teacher, with appearances on the schedule by local pastry professionals like Samantha Allen of Wentworth & Fenn and Miranda Brown of The Asbury, as well.
And if you prefer a little funk over sugar, sign up for a wine and cheese class in this same space, led by Heather Moss of Hosted by Heather. And for a kick, sign up for cocktail classes starting in November, led by Tamu Curtis of Liberate Your Palate.
“My goal is just to have this be a really great learning center,” Lukacik said.
