Assistant captains for the 2022 Presidents Cup’s U.S. team have been finalized by captain and Charlotte native Davis Love III. Steve Stricker and hometown favorite Webb Simpson will join Fred Couples and Zach Johnson, who were announced in April.

The honor is especially important to Simpson, who is from Raleigh and lives in Charlotte, as the event will be played at Quail Hollow Club, where he is also a member.

“When I first heard the news, it was something I was hoping for … it was a great feeling. Kind of flashbacks to when I was a kid,” Simpson says. “I’m really excited, and what a bonus to be at home at Quail Hollow.”

This is Simpson’s first time serving as a captain’s assistant, while Stricker was the U.S. team captain in the 2017 Presidents Cup, with Love III and Couples as his own assistants.

“There was a part of me that’s like, if I don’t make the team and Davis goes a different direction, that’s fine, but it’s going to be hard to see the Presidents Cup happen there and not be a part of it in some way. So I was really, really relieved to get a chance to be a part of it,” says Simpson, who has seven career PGA Tour titles.

Love III understands the significance, too. While speaking with the media on Aug. 2, he said, “Our goal has always been to add somebody new … This year, we’re going to add Webb Simpson. We’re going to add a local favorite on the course, neighbor, inside course knowledge, plus one of the guys on the Tour that the players really respect.”

Simpson is no stranger to the Presidents Cup. He played in the event in 2011, 2013, and 2019 with a record of 5-3-2. Working alongside Love III is especially significant to him. “Davis has always been my favorite player. I got to play under him in 2012, and that was awesome,” Simpson says.

The President’s Cup will take place from Sept. 20-25 at Quail Hollow Club. SP
