Hair and makeup artist Lindsey Regan Thorne is in the business of making women look and feel beautiful—whether it’s on their wedding day, for a branding photo shoot, or just while they’re browsing their Instagram feed (Follow her at @lindseyreganthorne). The 36-year-old founder of Be Pretty has grown her business from a solo venture to a veritable makeup empire in the Charlotte region, now with a team of seven other hair and makeup artists. These days, Regan Thorne spends less time working weddings and more offering makeup lessons, starting at $150, which she says have the power to transform her clients lives.

SouthPark tapped that expertise by chatting with her about what’s hot (and what’s not) when it comes to beauty and self-care in 2019, plus, the essentials of a five- minute makeup routine. Lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

We talk a lot about self-care in the new year. What do you recommend?
Invest in your skin. Whether it’s with a dermatologist or a spa, or it’s just really digging into the drugstore skincare, get on a good skincare regimen.

What’s an overrated trend you’ve seen?
Thankfully, “baking” under the eyes is going away. It’s where people take white setting powder, pat it under their eyes, let it sit there, and then dust it away. It’s supposed to brush away and lighten, but it looks like a big white patch under your eye.

What else is on the way out in 2019?
I think groomed brows are here to stay, but super sculpted brows are transitioning out. And heavy contouring is not what it used to be. You’re seeing a lot more natural, radiant, luminous, glowing skin, rather than super-cakey foundation.

What’s your “five-minute face” routine?
Whether you’re working 9 to 5 or are a stay-at-home mom, taking those few minutes every morning to put a fresh face on will make you ready to conquer the day. You’re combining a foundation and SPF, a light dusting of eyeshadow, a 3-in-1 blush/bronzer/highlighter, and an easy mascara. It’s saved on my highlight reel on Instagram.

Tell me about beauty trends for men.
I’m seeing men do full skincare regimens in the morning and night. Men are also getting more creative with their haircuts—in Charlotte, we’ve really moved away from the typical Southern look. And I’m seeing more and more facial scruff.

As a working mom, what are your best beauty hacks?
Dry shampoo, and a sunscreen and foundation combined. You never know where the day will take you—you could be working with clients and then outside with the kids. I also always have a tinted lip balm. lindseyreganthorne.com
